Quote of the Day
Too many of us wait to do the perfect thing, with the result we do nothing. The way to get ahead is to start now. While many of us are waiting until conditions are "just right" before we go ahead, others are stumbling along, fortunately ignorant of the dangers that beset them. By the time we, in our superior wisdom, decide to make a start, we discover that those who have gone fearlessly on before, have, in their blundering way, traveled a considerable distance. If you start now, you will know a lot next year that you don't know now, and that you will not know next year, if you wait.

The Truth about Photo Damage and Photo Aging

Photo damage and photo aging are scientific terms for the same condition. As you expose your skin to UV rays over time, damage is incurred in both the dermis and epidermis. This damage is visible through freckles, and eventually become as age spots. Additional results of extensive sun exposure are loss of collagen and elastin, which cause fine lines, loss of tone and wrinkling.
Photoaging is cummulative, so if you are a sun worshipper or tanning bed enthusiast, your skin will always look older than its chronological age. That "healthy glow" will one day give way to a leathery, thick skin that is less than flattering and not at all glowing.
Staying out of the sun altogether is a way to prevent sun damage, but since most of us are not willing to walk around with parasols all day, nor can we avoid the sun entirely, our best recourse is the use of daily sunscreen. Using a treatment product containing a sun protection factor of 15 or higher is the best investment in your skin's future.
UV exposure interferes with collagen and elastin production and can actually alter the DNA of some cells. With repeated exposures, the cycle continues and your skin develops wrinkles and sagging. Collagen gives skin strength and fullness while elastin is responsible for giving skin elasticity and stretch.1 In addition to the outwardly visible results of sun exposure, what it can do to your skin can be much more damaging. 1.3 million people will be diagnosed with skin cancer this year. More than 90% of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure, yet less than 30% of us routinely use sun protection.2
But don't despair; many of us grew up basking in the sun and slathering on baby oil. There are many options today to help you protect your skin from future damage and even some that will help to reverse the damage that you've already created. The important thing is to begin to protect your skin each and every day, not just when we are sun bathing or on the golf course.
The choices we make today will affect the way our skin behaves tomorrow. Choose products that contain SPFs that are formulated for your skin type and use them daily.
